Fuel use adjustments for add on tracks
1. What is "fuel use" and how does it affect the game?
Correct fuel use will allow you to accurately monitor your fuel during a race by having the game report how much fuel is needed for x amount of laps. It will also help you
gauge how many pit stops you need when you make a setup for your car. Correct fuel use will also aid the AI drivers by telling them how much fuel they need. Incorrect fuel use will result in wrong reporting for how many laps you can go with the fuel you have, and it will cause the AI drivers to either run
out of fuel or take wrong pitstops.
2. Why do I have to change the fuel use figures? Don't all tracks come with correct fuel use?
Some tracks were made for different classes of cars in mind. Most will come with fuel use values suited for F1 cars
while others have fuel use values suited to other mods.
In F12002 there is no way to have multiple fuel use values for different
classes, however in F1C there is a new "fuel
estimate" value that will allow mod creators to
"fudge" fuel use to accomodate different vehicle
classes (you can usually find the fuel estimate value in the
vehicles folder, as an engine or xxx_eng.ini file).
So different classes of cars burn fuel at different rates and without a corrected fuel use value for each track, you will get wrong fuel reporting if you run cars not suited for the fuel use of that track. Many people are simply coping F1 tracks over to other mods
and finding that fuel reporting is incorrect. This can be corrected.
3. Where are the fuel use values and how do I change them?
There are two values that affect fuel use:
FUEL
USE - found in the .aiw file in each track folder.
FUEL
CONSUMPTION - found in the xxx_eng.ini file in F1C, and in
the .hdv file in F12002.
The fuel consumption value tells the game how fast a car will consume fuel.
If you open up an eng.ini or .hdv file with wordpad you can see the value and you'll see that F1 cars are generally around 3.0 to 3.1 . . .
but other mod car classes can run as high as 7 or 9.
The .aiw fuel use value tells the game how much fuel is needed for each lap for that particular track. It does not affect your fuel consumption, but rather how the game reports how much fuel you need for x amount of laps.
You can view and edit the .aiw file by opening it with wordpad and scrolling down until you come to a section like this: (wordpad has a good search feature - just select edit then find and type in "fueluse" and hit enter and it will go directly to the entry)
[Waypoint]
trackstate=497
times=(121.2081,131.1898)
number_waypoints=1154
lap_length=5290.845215
sector_1_length=1796.352295
sector_2_length=3224.819824
LeftHandedPits=0
FuelUse=110017.351563
AICautiousness=(0.6800)
GrooveWidth=8.500000
GrooveWidthWet=3.500000
You will notice that fueluse has a long value with a decimal point in the middle. When changing this value, don't worry about anything past the decimal point. Just change the first set of numbers, save and close. It is the same with the lap length if you have to change that (some track .aiw files do not come with a lap length or fuel use value).
4. Fuel use chart description (for F12002)
In
the download section you will find my fuel use chart which
give fuel use numbers for various tracks.
When you look at the chart you will see lap lengths for each track and then the .aiw fuel use values in columns for each class. I have included the original fuel use values and they are highlighted in bold and underlined. The regular season tracks also come with the GTR and F1 fuel use values. Ahh you didn't know they were different did you? :)
All I did to come up with a rough estimate for the fuel use values is find the multiplier that would come close to the needed fuel use. I found that 20.9 works for F1 racing, and then 12 for GT, and 8.5 for NGT. If you use the 20.9 multiplier for the original F1 tracks you'll see that there are some tracks that will not follow this formula perfectly because there are subtle differences to the tracks like number of corners, straights, etc. that will affect the fuel use. You could spend hours testing each track to come up with a perfect number, but as you can see by the chart, just using a multiplier comes close enough. Just stay with the original values for the regular season tracks as this chart is mainly for swapping the add on tracks between F1 and the mods.
GTR tracks come with NGT fuel use values. When you run NGT cars on GTR tracks you will find correct fuel reporting, but not with the GT cars. There is currently no way to have two types of fuel use with the game and that is why the mod creators opted to have just NGT fuel use because burn less fuel and it's better to have the game report you have a fuller tank than not enough when you run the GT cars. If you only run GT cars, then I suggest you change all the values to the GT ones so they will run right, but be warned that if you try NGT cars, then the game will report that you can run more laps than is really possible and the AI will run out of fuel.
In the last section for the add on tracks I have an extra column to show the difference between the original .aiw fuel use value and the corrected one. Most of them are really close, but you will notice that some of them are way off. I suggest changing them to the new values, but it's up to you.
